London Modern Calligraphy & Watercolours workshop hosted by Shoshy Cadoodle®
We caught up with her earlier this week in central London, to quiz her about herself, the workshop, modern calligraphy, brush lettering and watercolours.
Can you tell us about your background and how it lead to where you are now?
I always knew that I loved drawing, painting and making things. I used to be obsessed with craft kit sets as a child, and would much rather use a paint brush than any other kind of toy. After doing my BA (Hons) in Illustration at the University of Westminster, I went on to study and work in film in New York. After a couple of years, I came back to London and worked in the fashion industry. Eventually though, I was lead back to my true love – painting. That’s when I set up Shoshy Cadoodle®, my illustration company. I began making illustrated wedding invitations and stationery, which lead me to explore the world of brush lettering and modern calligraphy.
What made you decide to combine modern calligraphy and watercolours in a single workshop?
Modern calligraphy is so much fun because you don’t have to abide by very regimented frameworks. There are guidelines which you do need to learn for the lettering, but once you learn them, you can play with them and make the lettering your own! Watercolours is such a good fit with modern calligraphy because, if you learn how, you can make the paint brush work like a calligraphy brush pen. This means your letter colour choice is unlimited and you can create letters with different effects like ombré. Watercolours can also be a very beautiful and colourful way to decorate modern calligraphy when it’s been written in black ink. There are just so many possibilities and that’s what I love about combining modern calligraphy with watercolours.
Wow, sounds amazing! Speaking of possibilities, what do you think of London? Has it provided you a good base for creative opportunities?
Definitely. My hometown is London, but at the point I moved back to London from New York, I had begun to make NYC feel like home and I really missed it. As time went on, I became more and more settled being back in London, and realised how much London has to offer when you start looking for it. One of the best things I did, on my arrival back to London, was to join the London Local Team. I’ve made so many creative friends and they all inspire me in different ways. I like that we’re from all different neighbourhoods of London, as I get to explore so much uncharted territory. I feel like London is like that for a lot of people, it’s so large and has so much going on, all the time, that it’s a city full of discoveries waiting to be made.
