Friday Feature - 24.02.17
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created Friday Feature. Every Friday we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 24 February, 2017 – We Are Scamp
Name: Jennifer Robertson
Location: Queen’s Park, North West London
Etsy Shop: We Are Scamp
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
Scamp is a partnership of two sisters, Stacey and myself (Jennifer). We hail from south west Scotland but both now live south of the border – me in London and Stacey in Leeds. The business began when we both started having our own little Scampettes (five in total between us now!) and we were looking for a way to still work but manage to be around for the kids as well. Up until recently Stacey has been a part time Physiotherapist and the rest of her time was spent on Scamp but now she is full time with the business. I’ve worked on Scamp full time for the last few years. Hobbies wise I do love a good book and one of my favourite things is a night at the cinema or theatre. I’m also an outdoor swimming fan – you’ll find me in the Hampstead Ladies Pond pretty regularly and occasionally in the rivers, seas and lakes!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
We got started on Etsy about two years ago having already been selling on our own website and Not On The High Street. We were really keen to expand our market and felt that Etsy would give us an opportunity to sell to customers in the States as well as reach more UK customers! We love the enthusiasm of etsy customers who really get the whole designer/maker process and appreciate the work involved in what you do. As for challenges, being found within the mass of products on etsy can seem a bit daunting but we plug away with tags and product descriptions to keep our SEO as up to date as possible!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
The design of our products is a real fun part of the process. Stacey and I often independently come up with ideas at different times which we then work out what products these would work best on. We love a good font here so lots of our designs are quite heavily based around lovely typography. In terms of the actual making we have two quite distinct production processes at Scamp. Stacey and I design a range of products that are either laser cut (and are generally wooden) or fabric based where we vinyl cut the designs and heat press them on. Stacey is the laser cutting queen and I am the champion of vinyl cutter and fabric based products!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I love being the master of our own destiny and having the flexibility that being your own boss gives you. It can often mean working odd hours and never really switching off completely but I do feel it gives me the balance of being around for my kids as well as doing something challenging and fulfilling for myself.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined LoLo a couple of years ago as I find being part of a community of like minded people (in this case designers) a really inspiring and helpful place to be. I’ve not managed to attend many meetings, but find the Facebook group very useful and really enjoyed being part of the Christmas market in 2016.
