Name: Victoria Tojeiro

Location: North London

Etsy Shop: VictoriaDraws

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I'm a full time primary school teacher while dreaming of writing and illustrating my own picture books. I've always written, painted and drawn, though mainly for myself. My friends and family have always said I should have a go at selling my artwork, which I began doing at craft markets last year. I thought that this would be a good way of building my confidence, developing my style, and there's always been a little part of me who's fancied being an artist, or at least self-employed. My first market was totally nerve-wracking but from the first sale I was hooked, and haven't stopped since. Working full time, then creating or selling at the weekends and holidays doesn't leave much time for other hobbies, but my favourite non-work related things are cooking for friends and family, sitting with my cat, going for walks and collecting interesting sticks. Being born and raised in the very leafy burbs of north London I've always enjoyed my countryside fix, but also find incredible amounts of beauty in the city and can never stay away for very long.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?

Lots of customers I met at markets asked if I sold online so after a few markets I took the plunge and opened my Etsy shop. I love how easy it is to use and the way customers have the option to buy online, something I think we're all increasingly doing! The challenges I face, selling prints, cards and paintings, are trying to get across the feel and quality of my work in photos. I find that people are much more likely to buy online when they've seen me and my work in person, rather than at first sight on etsy, although I have had some very trusting online buyers!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:

I carry my sketchbook everywhere I go, and am always jotting or doodling ideas. At the weekends and school holidays I spent time working on my favourites of these. Some I sell as original paintings, others might get a bit of photoshop treatment if they're to be sold as prints. I experiment with my paints, inks or collage materials and play around until I'm satisfied. There's no secret formula.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

I love meeting people in person and get a real kick out of using social media platforms to grow my business. My business is still very much in its infancy, and I've got a long way to go, but I'm doing what I love and what I've always wanted to do. Not to mention as a scatterbrained, bossy boots, I think it's best for me, and others, that I'm my own boss!

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?

I joined the team late last year as a way of meeting and learning from more experienced etsy sellers. I find the Facebook group invaluable, I can't believe how generous and supportive everyone else and it certainly makes the etsy selling experience less lonely and more motivating. I've yet to attend a meet up but it is high on my list of to-do's for 2017.
