Friday Feature - 17.03.17
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created Friday Feature. Every Friday we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 17 March, 2017 - Twisted Twee
Name: Suzi Warren
Location: Camden, North London
Etsy Shop: Twisted Twee
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I started Twisted Twee 13 years ago when my daughter was born as an antidote to the cloyingly sentimental childrenswear that was prevalent at the time. Countering bug-eyed prancing foals with designs that was more honest and entertaining about the befuddling world of child rearing. From there my partner and I applied the same practical idiocy to home wares, adult clothing and items of Object D'aft. From my small garden chalet in Camden I try to maintain a silly yet visually beguiling finesse to products ranging from depressed bunting (Festoons of Gloom) to Political Pants, Gin hot water bottles, knitted jewellery and pillowcases for bed hoggers. When I'm not lashed to a printing press I whittle my time away hunting for brightly coloured tat in boot fairs, taking photos of happy nonsense, cook, sew, run and dance.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I started on Etsy about 2 years ago and started doing it 'properly' after buying an Etsy shop review about 12 months ago. It made an enormous difference to our exposure and sales. My lovely co-worker Emma now puts a day a week into checking and maintaining the site, and the Shop Updates are inspiring me to create daft and inviting content - which we have just started to do. Etsy really is a wondrous place, bursting with so many gems, so much energy, beauty and variety. And the people that I've met behind the work are colourful, careful folk. It's an ideal platform for my own singular brand of cheerfully sardonic lunacy.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
I think it up. I try it out on paper. I make a sample, (or get someone else to if I don't have the means to do it myself), and see if my partner likes it. He is the hole picker. The fault finder, the dampener of spirits. His job is to sprinkle soot on enthusiasm. Maddeningly he is rarely wrong. If we both like it, we make it in the chalet or get the base product made for our embellishment.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I have two. I used to work as a writer and art director in advertising and it is a sad truth of that industry that the closer you are to the creative idea, the less control you have over it. And now I have control and it's me and not the chairman's wife who decides what is made and what isn't. And the lovely ladies I have been able to spend my days with who work with me. Their good nature, talent, humour and biscuits have kept me buoyant.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined the team a while back so that I could participate in Etsy events at a local level, meet some of the other sellers and get a better understanding of how this terrific community works.
