As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created Friday Feature. Every Friday we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.

Friday 5 May, 2017 - Suede & Co.

Name: Dee Maxwell

Location: Bow, East London

Etsy Shop: Suede&Co

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I'm from Vancouver, Canada. I moved to Paris after university, then to London a year later. I've been here nearly 3 years now! I work full time in fashion e-commerce. A very boring job, but my shop keeps the creativity alive. I don't have many hobbies apart from my shop! But I like a nice evening in the pub with my boyfriend, riding around Victoria park and visiting markets!

Ultra shiny! My favourite new bag with 3 tones of metallics.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?

I started my shop after amassing a collection of recycled vintage suede off cuts and remnants from my previous job at a vintage brand. I had the idea for making them into pouches, and Suede&Co was born! After about a year of being open, I realised my recycled suede couldn't really be a long term business goal, as my stock was dwindling quite fast. I re launched my shop last August with a new collection of colours and photography and it's been booming ever since! I love Etsy's interface, it's so easy to use and really user friendly. I work in e-commerce, and that CMS is no where near as easy to use! I also love how it gives you reach to customers all over the world. It's a challenge to get your products found, as there are so many other products on Etsy.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:

There are a lot of makers out there making leather items, but they tend to border on the traditional, so Browns, blacks etc. I like to flip the switch on what people perceptions on what leather is by using bright, trend focused colours and super soft flexible leathers. I start by looking at colour forecasting to see what is going to be the next trends. I create my mood boards and colour stories and then source my leathers from there!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

I like being able do whatever I want! (For the most part..)

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?

I was one of the first members in Emma's team, back when there was 3 separate teams. I'm a foreigner in this country so I wanted to meet other like minded people and make friends!
