Friday 4 August, 2017 - Naomi Tracz Jewellery
Name: Naomi Tracz
Location: Hackney, East London
Etsy Shop: Naomi Tracz Jewellery
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I live in Hackney with my partner, two young children and two elderly cats. I studied photography at university but I have always been interested in jewellery and took part time classes at City Lit. What started as a hobby turned into a passion and I did a City and Guilds in jewellery making, studying part time whilst also working as an editor for a website. I now work out of my studio in Hackney, fitting my work around my family.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I started my Etsy shop in November 2014 not long after my youngest child turned one, I wanted a way to start selling my work whilst still being home for my children. Opening an Etsy shop seemed the perfect way to do it. The shop was very easy to set up and though sales were slow to start with, things are improving every year. It can be hard to be found on Etsy as it is now such a large market place but I have been working on my SEO and tags as well as improving my photography.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
I am very inspired by ancient jewellery as well as the natural world. I do try to sketch ideas down but also often find the best designs popping into my head while I'm falling asleep! Once I know what I want to make, I sit down at my bench and get started. I tend to have many pieces on the go at once as I do get bored, especially at the filing and sanding stages, so will move from one thing to another to keep myself engaged.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I love the flexibility that comes from running my own business. it means I can grow it at my own pace and be there for my children while they are young, fitting my work in while they are out, and in the evenings. It also means I get to make all the decisions which is great but sometimes is a bit overwhelming! Being part of the London Local Team has been really helpful as I have a group of people to go to with my questions.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined the London Local Team in 2015. Initially I joined so I could apply for the Etsy Made Local market but I have found it a really useful and proactive team. When I was getting ready for my first market I was pretty nervous and had no one to talk to, I asked for advice on the London Local Team Facebook page and got so many useful suggestions.
