Friday 9 June, 2017 - Mountain & Molehill
Name: Elizabeth Smallman
Location: Stoke Newington, North London
Etsy Shop: MountainMolehill
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am a North London girl with a toddler, a baby and a very tolerant husband. I have just discovered that going back to the part-time day job (PA/Office Manager) isn’t cost effective with childcare fees so for the first time am going it alone with just the pennies from Mountain & Molehill. Exciting and scary! I am rather fortunate that my husband works in fine chocolate and brings his work home with him. We both enjoy tasting new things and trying out unexpected combinations. I am never happy unless I have a project on the go. I find it good to have a non-commercial creative thing to do.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I have been on Etsy for many years but only three as Mountain & Molehill. My start was slow but partially as I joined around the time that my old business was loosing steam and I didn’t really invest in it. A few years on and a massive change of direction and I am getting somewhere. My real introduction to Etsy was as a shopper. Why wouldn’t I with so many lovely things to buy?! I wanted to be part of it. The main challenge is that it is something that you get what you put in and I just don’t have the hours in the day that I would like to have to do the work. Yet when I do find time it reaps rewards.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
It starts with an idea inspired by the obvious (a trip to the zoo) or the not so obvious (hearing a well-known phrase, singing a nursery song for the umpteenth time). Then it’s hunt for good antique animal images and the fun part of throwing them down to see if anything works or a story springs out. Occasionally I have a clear idea in my head of what I want... usually this is nothing like what actually happens! Once a decent shape is in place the real work of making it look beautiful begins. Finally it’s time to print and see if it works in the flesh. At this point my husband is nagged constantly with requests to look at the umpteenth ‘new version’.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
That I can do it whenever I have a free moment! Not very inspiring as an answer but if I were not running my own business I would be paying a LOT on childcare fees.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined the team in the run up to Christmas 2015. I had been accepted to the Etsy Made Local event in Soho and wanted to join in the fun properly and meet people. Now I wouldn’t be without it. So many lovely, creative people with great ideas and constructive feedback and opinions.
