TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I create keepsake jewellery with British grown flowers, from my garden and a local farm I work with. My business is full time around my kids. I love to paint, grown vegetables and enjoy a good box set or movie.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I came across Etsy when I was looking for somewhere suitable to sell handmade items, at the time there wasn’t much and everyone in the UK knew about Ebay. I started my first shop with a few mini paintings and discovered that if you wanted to sell art you had to go big or put your designs onto something that sells. Everything was a learning curve, from how to create something new, to accounts, photographs and everything else too. At the beginning everything needed doing and it felt really hard as I had never run my own business before. Etsy’s platform was a great place to start and was easy to navigate. Now I’ve been selling for 5 years it is just about tweaking and keeping things fresh. My challenges now are to keep up with my social media, improve and update my photos and make sure that I have someone to proof read my writing as my dyslexia allows me to see what I want it to say, not what it actually says!
TELL US A ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS?
Each year I spend time looking through seed catalogues (for new flowers) and working out what I can grown in my garden. After a season of growing I can cut and dry the flowers. If the flowers keep their pigments after the drying process, you get a good sense how they will work in the glass. I love mixing lots of different colours together but sometimes people just want a lovely pop of one colour to wear.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
From a personal point of view I love being around for the kids, there isn’t any compromise on making them feel worse when they are off sick for the day. From the business point of view, I like the fact I get to choose which events I want to do, where I want to take the business. I love the positive feed back and the reactions I get when people find me at events.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I have been apart of the London Local Team from the beginning. I joined the team as I wanted to be apart of a community that worked together and shared the same interests. It’s great that the team is all local and able to meet up, create events and workshops and even collaborate together. We Are Scamp and myself are collaborating together with another designer on a pop up shop at Craft Central at the beginning of March. Although we had met before, it was through the London Local team that helped us to become closer and start a great working relationship. From the 6th -12th March our pop-up show will be celebrating “Urban Spring” at Craft Central, 33-35 St John’s Square, London, EC1M 4DS. Come along and say hello.
