Etsy Shop: FrenchLaundryUK

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I'm a full time mum of two boys, 7 and 11 years old. I'm French but have lived most of my life abroad. First the USA, where I met my husband and then London for the past 8 years. While living in New York I worked for a French fabric company and had the opportunity to travel to the many fabric trade shows in America and Europe. This is how my love for fabrics was born! I then bought a sewing machine, took classes and the rest is history. I love making, sewing, painting and doing it all in many shades of pink!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?

Like many Etsy sellers I got started on Etsy after comments and compliments from friends. It seemed like people around me, truly liked my cushions and handmade items so I thought why not? I love Etsy because it is so user friendly, I know that posting a new product will be a breeze. I also love the community there, it's quite amazing to be connected to so many makers. My main challenge on Etsy is to make my shop more visible. I have taken on board the many recommendations from Etsy blogs/articles i.e take good pictures; make sure your images are clean and professional looking; work on a detailed description; make it personable and use all the keywords!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:

With me everything starts with colour. I fall in love with a colour combo, a fabric, a print and the fun is to mix and match. I also go through creating phases. I can be in a sewing mode for weeks at a time and sew, sew, sew. Then I'll stop completely and start hand embroidery or painting. I just started making keychains and love it, I use paint, paper, aluminium and varnish.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

The best thing is that I do what I love and can be as creative as I want. It's also very important for me to be flexible with my time. I do want to spend time with my family, be at the school gate and be there for homework! I also really enjoy going to sales and fairs. It's rewarding to meet clients face to face and hear their feedback. It's also fun to meet other exhibitors and share tips and experiences.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?

I just joined the team and I'm really looking forward to being in touch with all the different members. I think that working from home is great but it can also be a little bit isolating. So being part of a group of like-minded people sounds like a lovely and social idea. It also makes a lot of sense business wise, it's always useful to share our experiences, tips on Etsy selling, events and craft fairs.
