As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created the Friday Feature. On the last Friday of each month we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 25 January, 2018 - Naomi Tracz Jewellery
Name: Naomi Tracz
Location: Hackney, East London
Etsy Shop: Naomi Tracz Jewellery
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am Naomi and I am a jewellery designer and maker and a mum to two kids (and two cats) I studied jewellery making part time as an adult, at first it was a hobby but I found that I loved it so much I wanted to make it into a business. I currently fit my jewellery making around my kids who are 7 and 4, my smallest is about to start school so I'm looking forward to having a bit more making time!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I started my Etsy shop in 2014 when my youngest child turned one, I had known for a while that I wanted jewellery making to become a business for me but had been focussed on my family (and also a little bit nervous) and Etsy seemed like a great way to start out. It was quite a steep learning curve and took me a while to get my shop looking how I wanted. I love the fact it's so easy to use Etsy, the interface is great, the main challenge is getting noticed as the market place is so huge now you have to really work hard to stand out.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
I am very inspired by ancient jewellery and love to visit the British Museum, they have an incredible collection of ancient jewels and was very happy that as of this summer some of my work is stocked in their shop! I am also inspired by the natural world and love to take these inspirations and pare them down to elegant and minimal jewellery. I am also developing a real interest in gems and love finding unusual stones for my jewellery.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
My favourite thing about running my own business is the freedom to work my own hours, it works really well with having young children, I can be there for them when they finish school and can go to all their performances and school events. It can be challenging sometimes and I do need to work on my time management and organisation, but I love being my own boss.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined the London Local team back in 2015 so I could apply for the Etsy Made Local market. I didn't manage to get a stall at the market but I'm so pleased that I joined the team. When I did do my first market I asked for help on the LoLo Facebook group and I got so much great advice, it really helped me a lot! Since then I have been to meet ups, done a speed shop assessment, done a few of the markets and been part of the pop up shop. It's great to know that I have that community to turn to when I have a question.
