Friday Feature - 28.08.18
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created the Friday Feature. On the last Friday of each month we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 28 September, 2018 - Hey Joey Its Estelle
Name: Estelle Morris
Location: East London
Etsy Shop: HeyJoeyItsEstelle
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I'm originally from the West Midlands and now based in London. I live on a narrowboat with my boyfriend, continuously cruising through the city (primarily east London), and we have an art studio in Hackney Wick. I split my time between being a freelance illustrator, working regularly for The New York Times and various clients and running my Etsy shop, Hey Joey It's Estelle. I love creating new items for my shop and recently bought a risograph printer, which I hope to use very soon in conjunction with my shop.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I got started on Etsy quite accidentally actually; I created some screen prints and greeting cards for the Twin Peaks UK Festival and they went down so well that I decided to start selling them online. My shop started doing quite well so I continued to add more and more products. I love the fact I'm my own boss and dictate my time exactly as I like - the Etsy community is also fab and I love connecting with other sellers through the platform and Instagram. The challenges are continuing to keep up with SEO changes and trying to promote my shop in new ways.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
I create everything by hand and draw my designs with Indian ink or a brush pen, then they're scanned in and edited/coloured digitally. I then apply them to greeting cards, colouring books, pins, patches, tote bags etc. I love researching new TV shows & films to incorporate into my shop inventory and making people smile with silly and tongue-in-cheek designs!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Being in charge of my own profits, branding, products and customer service is great and really fulfilling. I love being in control of every aspect from the design to the packaging and photography of my products. It's amazing to be able to live off my own business in London and to be a part of the Etsy team and Etsy platform. I don't take myself too seriously but I work very hard at my business and hopefully my products make people smile!
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I can't remember exactly when I joined but I think it was a couple of years ago - I liked the idea of smaller Etsy groups and being able to connect to other artists and makers near me, as none of my close friends do the same kind of working hours or business as me. Being a part of the Facebook group is great too and I look to it for inspiration and advice and like to know that there are lots of local events going on.
