Friday Feature - 26.10.18
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created the Friday Feature. On the last Friday of each month we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 26 October, 2018 - Elizabeth Bell Ceramics
Name: Elizabeth Bell
Location: Clapham, South London
Etsy Shop: Elizabeth Bell Ceramics
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
Part-time potter and pottery teacher. I work full time in administration for a hairdressing salon. I have dabbled with pottery for the last 4 years, and am at the stage where I am ready to make and sell, and eventually take it part-time/full-time. I am Australian, but have lived in the UK for the last 18 months. I did an internship with Illyria Pottery in Oxford for 4 months, and now work with Jo Davies as a ceramics teacher. Life is rather busy between full-time work, teaching on Saturday and making at home. I use a community kiln to fire all my work, which luckily is only 10 doors up from me in Stockwell!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
I started on Etsy years ago after our wedding. We made seating charts and welcome signs for our own wedding, and got such great feedback that we started making and selling. I am slowly building stock to sell on Etsy, but am so picky about what i am posting & selling. I love the community vibe from Etsy. The challenges I find is time! I wish I had an extra day in the week!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
Sometimes I design and have something in mind, other times I just put some clay on the wheel and just go for it. Sometimes I feel the clay wants to do its own thing, so i just got for it! I have recently been challenging myself and making really large bowls and platters. These are for my first even commission! Centering 3kgs of clay at once can be challenging, but I have done it several times now... onto 4kg?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Selling something that has been crated with your own hands is very cool. I love seeing my made items in use. I enjoy the flexibility of working on weekends when I am not travelling, so some weekends I will pump out a lot a pieces on 2 days, and other weekends I might only have 1 hour to do some making, but thats the name of the game. I fit pottery into my life, so if we are busy or away, then I will just make next weekend instead!
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
July 2018. I love the community feel. I am trying to establish myself in London, and am continuously trying to learn from other artists. I love the access to markets, meet-ups and workshops. I look forward to meeting other artists and sharing tips and receiving feedback
