Friday Feature 30.11.18
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created the Friday Feature. On the last Friday of each month we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 30 November, 2018 - Charlotte Filshie
Name: Charlotte Filshie
Location: Bethnal Green, East London
Etsy Shop: Charlotte Filshie UK
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
Hey! My name is Charlotte, I am from Australia and have lived in London for over 5 years. I studied jewellery design in Melbourne and have been making and selling ever since.
I have always loved to draw. When I was in primary school I would do my older sisters Visual Communication & Design homework because it was more fun than my own! When I got to high school I would draw in my spare time, but rarely showed anyone. Now I draw for a living I don't get to draw for the sake of drawing very much, but I have so much fun creating my dinosaurs I don't feel like I am missing out.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
After I finished studying I opened my first Etsy store selling jewellery. I really struggled to get exposure, sales and struggled to balance full-time work and Etsy with work always winning. When I moved to London I closed the shop and opened a new one with geometric and animal jewellery made from upcycled materials. Over time my designs became more and more about dinosaurs (they always got the most attention at markets). I started focusing on the dinosaur illustrations a bit over 2 years ago and haven’t looked back!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
I begin most of my illustrations as sketches then trace them in Illustrator. I have a graphics tablet which makes it easier and quicker to make the sketches into vectors. All my dinosaurs are based on real dinosaurs so I do a lot of research on what each dinosaur should look like and draw the dinosaurs in different poses until I have one I like. I like to make my dinosaurs do stuff so I move their limbs and make tweaks so they can wear capes, play golf and even ski!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I love to travel, so working for myself really gives me the freedom to travel and explore. I can set my own schedule and plan travel around busy times. I also love getting feedback from customers, it is always nice to see that even a sticker can make someone day!
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I joined the team over 2 years ago and became a leader a few months ago. I joined the team as a way to meet new people who are also selling on Etsy and self-employed. The meetups and events the team hold throughout the year have been so helpful with growing my business. Now I am a leader I am really excited to help the team members with all the things I have learnt.
