Friday Feature - 02.06.17
As part of our Meet the Maker series on our blog, we have created Friday Feature. Every Friday we will feature a team member and their Etsy shop, to give you a quick glance behind the scenes and discover more about our diverse team members.
Friday 2 June, 2017 - Ant Design
Name: Kashmira Jhaveri
Location: Kingston upon Thames, South West London
Etsy Shop: antdesign
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I've lived in London for 19 years but grew up in Hong Kong. When I moved to London I went back to college to study graphic design during which time my 2 babies were born (couldn't have done it without the support of a very understanding partner!) After qualifying I started working with SMEs. I diversified when I discovered paper cutting and now run Ant Design Gifts full time. My hobbies? I love walking with my dog Gus (a very soft cockerpoo) and dream about cooking new recipes every week but never seem to ever get around to it! I also belong to a book group that has now been going for about 15 years!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON ETSY?
Etsy was the perfect platform for me when I started making paper cuts. I wasn't sure how well it would go, so it was an affordable way to start. I love that anyone on this planet can sell through Etsy and people from all over the world buy from me - I have shipped to exotic places like India, China, Dubai and as far as New Zealand. The challenges are always the same - the ever changing mystery of how to appear on the first few pages of the search function (any tips welcome please!)
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN/MAKING PROCESS:
More often than not, I get new ideas whilst walking my lovely dog Gus. I try an allocate a day a week to develop these designs. The rest of my time is taken up making the orders I receive and I do the framing as well. A couple of years ago I started making gold foil prints and cards and have started incorporating the gold foil within my paper cuts too.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I know this is a classic answer but it's so true for me - working doing what I love on my own terms. I have been able to develop my business whilst bringing up my two children and also being a support to my parents. It's meant many very long days especially when I first started, but it's been worth it!
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN THE TEAM?
I can't actually remember when I joined the team, but I do remember joining to be part of a community close to me. Etsy is so big and it's good to connect with people who live close by.
